Short Keys -
Time Management Tool - Free Download
I want to tell
you about a big time and effort saver. It's a software tool
called "Short Keys".
Download it for free by clicking
here.
This is their "lite" version, but it should suffice.
What is it? I'll
just give an example.
Say you type in the same thing
over and over again. For example:
Typing that in
over and over again gets old.. and you risk making mistakes.
Besides, it's mind-numbing monotony. It depletes your energy -
energy that could be better served on other things.
Rather than do
that, why not use Short Keys to do it for you?
You simply come
up with a key or key combo that is easiest to remember -
something you otherwise don't use (or rarely use). Ideally a
key closest to your space bar or enter bar. Maybe the ~
squiggly key. Or, if you want, a key combination like xyz. You
probably don't type those symbols/letters often.
Then follow that
key combo with intials representing the words you want typed
in.
For example, in
the above example, maybe you could let "bye" (as in goodbye)
represent that 3 line sign off.
Just type
~bye in the space (which they call "Original
Short Key"). Then type in your "Replacement text" (as they
call it), which in this case is:
Regards, Your Name
YourEmailAddress@somedomain.com
So, anytime you type
~bye, in a heartbeat your
signoff, name, and email address will be typed in.
You can edit that anytime.
Now, some people will think:
"How will I be able to remember these 'codes'?" Believe me,
you will remember them. At first, put them down on a piece of
paper and have it handy. Stick with it. In the long run,
you'll end up saving massive time and effort... and maybe even
spare yourself from metacarpal syndrome or arthritic problems.
The key is to make a conscious
effort to use it. Put a "sticky" note on your monitor "Use
Short Keys". Maybe have a picture of someone holding their
wrist and writhing in pain.
I've often heard that it takes
about 5 weeks to establish a habit (something you do
automatically, without thinking about it beforehand). So...
give it 5 weeks.
Regards!
